Got PC Formatted OK but IE windows are blank when opened Thanks to all those who helped in getting my C: Drive formatted. Back up and running and more or less have a rebuilt system now. Since the rebuild though, I seem to be having a problem with IE. I cannot open hyperlinks from the main IE window. When I click on a HL and the new IE window opens it is blank. What I do notice is that the page makes no effort to open or trace the link (i.e. there is no progress bar at the bottom of the window or destination URL). It does not appear to be a consistent fault as some links or pages do open whilst others just produce the blank window. Anyone have any fixes for this please. I am running StopZilla, Sygate Personal Firewall Pro and XP SP2 (with it's firewall), yet these were all on the previous incarnation of my PC and setup the same way and I never had this problem. I have removed IE and reinstalled it, and done searches on Google (running this tool http://windowsxp.mvps.org/IEFIX.htm ) Thanks in advance once again. Guy [Edited on 19-3-2005 by Guido] |
run Firefox instead www.mozilla.com I now only ever use IE if I need to get to my bank as they don't support Firefox. |
Guido when you get a dodgy link look at the bottom left hand corner of IE, normally you will see a small blue e icon but if there's a problem with the page you will see a yellow icon, double click on this and it should tell you the problem. Murray Mint |
Don't run the two firewall's together you get all sorts of problems, you can turn the XP one off. |
Cheers Steve, But it seemed to work ok before theformat (i.e. 2 firewalls). Will deactivate the XP one and see what/if anythings happens. Gc |
Have you got a router etc between you and the outside world? Can you prove you have a connection to the internet, can you open a command prompt and ping something like www.yahoo.co.uk Simple stuff really just to make sure it isn't IE at fault here |
Thanx JP Seen 'pinging' done by the bods who setup my PC in the last job but have no idea how to do it. Can you advise in layman's terms please. As an aside have done all of the below. Seems to work when I first open the main window and then click on a hyperlink, second window opens and searches/connects to the URL. If I then close the 2nd window and select another HL from the 1st window, a new window opens but remains blank. Run the following commands from start/run. Run each line individually. After each run, you should see a short message stating the command was successful. The first command is the one most likely to work. regsvr32 Urlmon.dll regsvr32 Shdocvw.dll regsvr32 Shell32.dll (only applicable to Windows ME, Windows 2000 and XP - if using an earlier operating system, run regsvr32 shdoc401.dll) regsvr32 Oleaut32.dll regsvr32 Actxprxy.dll regsvr32 Mshtml.dll Cheers. Guido, I don't understand why you have had to run the regsvr command to be honest. But getting back to your original question.. 1. connect to the internet (Dial up/broadband... whatever) 2. click start>run type cmd and click OK 3. at the command prompt type "ping www.yahoo.co.uk" (without the speech marks) If you've got a connection you should see a message along the lines of reply from ....... If not you'll get reponse timed out..... Try replacing yahoo with a few other URL's www.google.com www.ducatisportingclub.com you get the message just to prove if you have got a connection |
