What's wrong with it?

If you're getting IMMO errors then there's a couple of things you may want to check first:
1. Did you wash it / ride it in the rain? It may just need to dry out!
2. Check if the antenna in the ignition cover has dropped out of place
3. Check if your other key(s) still work as you may just need to reprogram the keys

Thanx for reply.no hadn't washed it or anything like that,got the bike home with the dreaded not to be used daily, red key.the code brought up by the bike is for the actual key transponder not the antenna.anyway got a mate in the car trade on it, doesn't look like its going to be much of a problem to get a new key coded.

From the manual (may help)

In the event of replacement of one or
more components of the immobilizer
system (e.g. the black keys, the
decoder, or the engine control unit),
the parts in question must be
programmed. To perform this
operation, proceed as follows:
- check that the motorcycle battery
terminals are correctly connected
and that the battery is in perfect
condition.
- Prepare the red key and the black
keys.
- Insert the red key (2) in the ignition
switch (3).
- Turn the key to the ON position to
switch on the instrument panel.
The instrument panel multifunction
display will show the CODE
symbol, the number of keys
inserted (“1” in this case) and
start a countdown from 30 to 0.
Note: before performing this
action ensure that the ignition
switch remains in the OFF position
for at least thirty seconds.
- Check that the countdown has
started and turn the key to OFF
before it terminates (around
three seconds).
- Remove the red key within 15
seconds, insert a black key (4)
and turn the switch to ON. Display
will show the number of keys
inserted (“2” in this case) and
start a countdown from 30 to 0.
- Check that the countdown has
started and turn the key to OFF
before it terminates.
- Remove the black key within 15
seconds, insert another black key
(5) and turn the switch to ON.
Display will show the number of
keys inserted (“3” in this case) and
start a countdown from 30 to 0.
- Check that the countdown has
started and turn the key to OFF
before it terminates.
- Remove the black key within 15
seconds, insert the red key again
and turn the switch to ON. The
display will show the number of
keys inserted (“4” in this case) and
start a countdown from 30 to 0.
- Check that the countdown has
started and turn the key to OFF
before it terminates. If the
programming sequence has
terminated successfully, the led (A)
on the instrument panel will flash.
At this point the two black keys and
the instrument panel decoder have
been successfully programmed.
Continue the procedure as follows:
- turn the ignition to ON with the red
key within 15 seconds. The CODE
symbol on the display will switch off.
- Leave the key in the ON position
for at least 5 seconds and no
more than 15 seconds, to allow
the data to transfer from the
decoder to the engine ECU and
then turn the key to OFF.
- Wait for 10 seconds, then turn the
ignition switch to ON again.
The programming procedure is now
terminated. The immobilizer system
has been completely programmed.
Even if you need to program only
one component of the immobilizer
system, always run the entire
procedure. At the end of the
procedure, check that the engine
can be started with the black keys.
Warning
If display shows the message
“OFF” during the procedure, this
indicates that the programming
routine has been aborted. Repeat
the procedure from the beginning.
To ensure that the immobilizer is
correctly programmed, you must
scrupulously observe the timings
and other conditions indicated.

As per Chris' instructions above, if you have the Red Key you can simply get ANY black key reprogrammed to start your bike using the key programming procedure.

I would try reprogramming your keys again, as it may be that the battery drained on the bike enough for it to lose the list of (black) keys that are allowed to start the bike.

If your black key really has failed (ie, the chip inside is unreadable*) then you can simply get a blank transponder key from Ducati - they cost around £25 from a dealer I think - then pay to have it cut to your ignition using either the red key or other black key to copy the key blade. Then you will need to reprogram the keys to allow the new black key to start the bike.

* sometimes the chips in them fail. I had the one on my BMW car fail completely and it had to be replaced rather than reprogrammed. Probably due to spending 2 days in my toolbox with a magnetic parts tray that probably killed the chip!!

When i insert my red key it doesn't do the countdown mentioned allowing me to start the reprograming of the black keys?

When i put my red key in the eobd light doesn't come on unlike my black keys thus enabling me to start the bike but the display with the red key is exactly the same as with the black key,where im lead to believe it should show a 1 (for first key) and a 30 second countdown. am i missing something?
