2004 749 Oil (only qucik question) Castrol?

Alright,

Ok, oil has been done to death and I have just read all the threads and sorta happy that I need:

4Ltrs of 10W40

or

4Ltrs of 15W50

Ducati recommend Shell Advance Ultra 4 10W/40, engine builders state Motul 300V 10/40 (I think), racers like 15W50, what about Castrol?

The reason I ask is, I have always used Castrol in most my cars and bikes, however know Ducati's are very fussy (defo females) and therefore don't want to risk any bad-ness... Also I have a dicount card for Halfords and they serve Castrol :D

So would Castrol Power 1 Racting 4T 10W40 (fully synth) be ok for my Ducati (11,500 miles)?

Answers on a post(card) please,

Cheers,

Diehard ;)

Yes. In the past used the very same stuff myself, although gets a bit thin when pushing hard, notice the oil consumption.

I would stick with 15/50 fully synth.

when i asked the same question i was told to stick to 10/40 as recommended by ducati, how much oil consumption did you use when running 10/40 compared to 15/50

i'd say castrol should be fine, the one i wouldnt use is silkolene but thst just coz i dont like it

Used 10/40 in my 916 motor. I was topping up after every rideout (say 150-200miles). Currently I have a 996 and use 15/50 Motul 300V fully synth, very happy indeed, and very little topping up required.

I guess it is down to preference and how you use your bike. I'd stick with 15/50, but the decision is yours.

Regards.

Having worked for Castrol, I'd be more than happy with their R&D and "experience". You don't get much better than 100+ years at the top of your game.

Add that to most Ducati owners manuals stipulating 10w/40 as the oil grade that meets the biggest operating temperature range, then I'd safely say 10w/40 from Castrol is ok.

Don't be sucked in by Shell being stated as the only oil for ducati's etc. That part comes down to who pays the most or is most in favour at the time, not who's necessarily the "best" or only choice.

jeez, you got a leak or something ?? i must have done 5k with my 748 and it never needed topping up once, my 916 was the same although that was used on track so had the oil changed every couple of days which is still more miles than your rideouts

Cheers for the advice guys, will be buying some Castrol this week at 10W40, but just to be safe I'll keep an eye on the compsumption :)

Just for reference, Halfords is £32.99 for Power 1 Racing (4 Litres) IIRC, normal Power 1 is £28.99, so get it the Racing stuff for about about £29 with the discount card...

Got a K&N filter off eBay too, so will get job done tomorrow and change coolant while I am at it (using Halfords Advanced stuff, hope that is ok)...
