Sport Classic ECU advice needed

Hi,

After a long wait I have the chance to pick up some second hand Termi slip-on silencers for my 06 Sport 1000 (Sport Classic). I'm only getting the silencers and not the DP ECU or DP airbox lid with a hole in the top.

My question is, can I just fit the silencers and not worry about the ECU? I've already spoken to a reputable Ducati specialist and they reckon the DS1000 with closed loop ECU (lambda sensor on the down pipe) will cope with it OK but give it a run to see if it has any flat spots/poor fueling. I'd like to get the ECU/air filter upgraded to match at some point anyway, and properly set up but I'm keen to get the pipes on to hear the sound :)

Any advice or experience shared most appreciated.

I don't think just putting the silencers on would have that much effect if you're keeping the original downpipe with the lambda sensor in it.

If you did want to go the whole route, I'm sure we can sort it out!

When I got the kit for the Hypermotard, which has the 1100DS engine, it came with the modified airbox lid and to be honest it is nothing more than a hole of about 20mm in the centre of the air filter - the air goes into the middle of the air filter cylinder and the out through the filter into the box; kind of inside-out compared to other filters!

I can sort you out an ECU reflash to get the right map, and we can modify your airbox lid in the same way that my Hyper one is done. The only thing you'd then need to fit is a performance air filter. My kit didn't come with one so I bought a K&N performance filter instead. This replaces the oem but has the better air flow.

You might want to find out about performance down-pipes as well, to replace the one with the lambda sensor as I think these are larger bore than standard. They may also replace the catalytic converter if you have one? I did pick one up off ebay really cheap but unfortunately it disappeared...!

Thanks Antony, I guess you'd have a quick reply!

My fear was having less restriction in the exhaust might make the engine run to lean. I think the full DP Termi kit includes a blanking-off bolt for where the lambda sensor goes on the standard down pipes (open loop DP ECU doesn't require a lambda sensor?).

I don't think I have a cat unless it is inside those huge standard drainpipe silencers.

I also read somewhere that the lean running of the standard engine can cause it to vibrate more than it would if the fueling was a little richer?

With the improved exhaust flow the gasses should escape quicker, but without changing the inflow (ie, an improved filter / airbox) then you shouldn't get that much of a difference?

Running lean will mean it will burn hotter so could cause running problems; it's always better to have too much fuel than not enough!

There is a fuel trimmer in the ECU which can be adjusted with the right kit as sadly it's not the case of turning a screw like it was on the old models. But we can sort that out for you, or just try the DP ECU and see how it runs with that on it.

Thanks Antony, I'll get the pipes on and see how it runs to start with. The re flash sounds great though if you can do it. I've found the K&N filter and also DP airbox covers on eBay; I see what you mean, they've just drilled a 20mm hole in the standard airbox!

Yeah, I was quite surprised that it was the only difference, and I did compare them side by side to check. In fact I might even have a picture...

A cheaper way might be to buy a second-hand airbox cover and modify it yourself. I have a 22mm hole saw which would take care of that quite easily...

Nice one Steve.

Haven't you two got any work to do?

You both don't know how humiliating it is to have an 8 year old mistake a watering can being filled from a garden tap for my bike being started up!

If you pick up the postage I have a standard airbox lid you can have FOC. I'll even do the mod for you.
