How to get 3 bikes to Silverstone?
 

Morning All

After low-speed offs on the last two trackdays of last year I'm trying to work out the best way to get 3 of us and bikes from Hertford to Silverstone on 12th May.

Has anyone had any luck getting 3 bikes in a van? Currently looking for a 3-bike trailer but may have to hire a van for now.

Any help/ advice appreciated.

I've gotten three into a LWB Hi-top sprinter before but I wouldn't try and get 3 superbikes into anything smaller. You need to make sure the LWB van has plenty of tie down anchors in the floor and possibly some on the sides as well for ratchet straps. Take plenty of old blankets to put over the bikes to protect them from the straps and the (must ensure!) the ply lining of the van.

Alternatively you could get a van with a towball and put a single bike trailer on it and two bikes inside the van - job done.

if you undo the bars and turn them in, it makes tehm narrower and you may get 3 in most normal vans

otherwise, LWB one would be better as you can stagger them

as TP says - lots of tie down points; something often lacking in hire vans so check it first...especially if boarded out. But then, if you cram them in, theres no where to do anyway, just need to stop them going forwards and backwards

put 2 in forwards, one on each side, and the 3rd one put in backwards, straight down the middle.

Take lots of cushions/pillows/etc to pad out between the bikes.

Spot on. I used a lwb Sprinter but in reality a swb would do just fine, as the 3 bikes go in side-by-side. The spare room at the front just gave us loads of space for parts, wheels etc. I wouldn't want to do it with bikes with decent bodywork though. I put two bikes in front first and strapped them to the sides with the bars and cans tight against the sides. Then pushed the other in between backwards. We had to remove the seat unit from the bike in the middle, and just wedged it in with cushions. The advantage of a lwb is you could put one or two bikes up front and two behind without squashing anything in.
If you are hiring a van then consider a luton body with a tail lift. You shouldn't need ramps then and you may get one bike across the front sideways and two behind it lengthways.

Thanks for all the comments, I've had an idea. I own a few vans for work but can only get 1 bike, maybe 2 at a squeeze in as they're racked inside. So 1 bike in the van and 2 on a trailer.

Next question, anyone got a 2-bike trailer for sale?

You can hire trailers at a very reasonable price - sometimes just £15 a day.

Believe it or not horseboxes are great for carrying bikes. I have shared on before and it easily managed two race bikes with spare wheels. They can be hired. You will obviously need to put the 3rd bike in the van.
