Plastic Frame Plugs (update) There was some discussion a while back about using plastic grommets or "hole plugs" from various suppliers to do the same job as the more expensive frame plugs. A colleague at work was popping out to Maplin at lunchtime so I went with him to buy some of their plastic "hole plugs" to see if they fit. From reading the website, it appears you buy them at 99p each in a minimum quantity of 10, but on arriving at their shop it turns out it's a pack of ten for 99p!! Will post more tonight when I've found out if they fit! |
R.S do them as well, I have them on my 998s and they look nice, not shiny plastic but slightly textured mat finnish |
Got to admit mine cost £50 from Tecmoto but they do look the dogs danglies in gold anodising with the STM logo etc etched out in silver:D. Chris |
Being skint and a tight arse, anyone know where you can get the grommets in north yorkshire? Cheers sticky. |
Ant, Do they fit then mate ? |
The good news is yes, they do fit! The 30mm fits lovely although is a little loose to start off with, so I bent out the tabs around the edge and it's now wedged in there lovely. However, the smaller ones are only 19mm across but the hole appears to be about 22mm. The plug does cover the hole but it's very loose, so I used some double-sided foam tape wrapped around the edge to hold it in place, which it does nicely. The plugs look really good on as they are a matt-black effect plastic which goes great with my grey frame and other black accessories on the bike. I'll take some pics tonight and put them up for you to judge for yourself. For those that want some, the order codes from Maplin are RG80 for the 19mm (small) plugs (99p for a pack of 10) and RG81 for the 30mm (large) plugs, again 99p for a pack of 10. You could try mail order (sign up for their email newsletter to get a 2 quid off any order discount voucher) but going to your nearest store is probably the best idea. So unfortunately I haven't stumbled across the big money-making plan to free me from working for the rest of my life, but I've just saved myself a few quid to put towards the next project... |
For anybody interested. Radio Spars do a blanking plug/Grommet kit that costs £30.37 ex vat that consists of 263 plugs in all different sizes. I have found this to be really useful and apart from the obvious fram plug use, can be used for othe odd holes etc to make the bike look nicer. Regrds Bob |
That should read "Radio Spares";) |
There is a local place called FastPak that sells them individually. 22 p each, that's a whopping 1.10 all told! There the black plastic variety and fit snugly. |
