Repair or break ?

Hi,
Just after some opinions really, the gearbox went on my 848 at Snetterton 300 last week. The cost of repair is going to be close to 2k so I'm in the position of deciding whether to repair the bike or split it for spares. It's a 2008 track bike including the following:

• Ohlins 1098s forks
• Ohlins TTX rear shock
• Uprated Brembo Radial callipers & Discs
• Brembo master cylinder
• Ducati perfermance stereing damper
• Ducati GPS lap timer and data aquisition system
• Quick action throttle
• Ducati perfermance rear sets
• Termignoni exhaust
• Gold DID chain
• Ducati performance seat
• Tinted double bubble screen
• Crash protection
• Many extra parts (including carbon)

Thanks

used engine or gearbox? Must be a few around at breakers

and if you split, you'll be amazed at the small stuff and how much that brings, so dont go giving switches and things away

Cheers, I've been trying the breakers, no joy as yet .. well nothing below 1.5K for an engine & I've been quoted 1K + to fit a new box. It breaks my heart but I may have to go down the route of splitting it :-(

When you say the gearbox went! What exactly went?

My understanding is that the selector bent which means that it wasn't fully engaging the gears. This has caused damage to 5th gear making it difficult to engage, although once in it doesn't pop out. I also had issues shifting down into 2nd on occasion. When it first started happening I thought it was me not being positive enough with the shifts, turns out it wasn't :-( From what I've been told it may be down to using a quick-shifter.

Fix it up....

Engine ok?

Chaz 15-Apr-2012 20:59

I'd like to have a look at that! Doesn't sound terminal to me could be an easy fix.

I wouldn't know what I'm looking at to be honest. I've been told that I may need some specialist tools to put the engine back together. The guy looking at it said that he's going to get a proper quote together today so I'll see what he comes back with, fingers crossed.

It could be just the selector claw needs setting up, you can do that without striping the motor.
Ducati boxes are quite robust I would be surprised if you have damaged a gear.

How much do you trust the guy doing the quote & is he a Ducati man? you don't need many special tools to strip a Ducati engine & you may not even have to strip it to repair the box.

+1 to what Chaz says.
