Urgent help needed re cooling fan

Hi There,

I've got an issue with baby 'r' in that the left hand fan as you sit on the bike and EOBD light is permanently on (from turning the ignition).

The error code is 18.2 (RH fan grounded to earth) and 11.2 (coil shorted to earth) but I've pulled it to bits and there is no sign of any issues with the wiring. The local dealer told me that it could be the battery having a low voltage as it's been on the optimate for what seems like forever, but having coughed up £65 (yes he saw me coming but I wanted to get out while the weather was good) the error is still there.

Does any one have an idea where I should be looking next. Given the dealers last bit of advice I want to narrow down the options before I have to stump up a wad on labour charges.

Thanks for your help

DD

Have you been using diagnostic on the bike and reversed the flylead polarities?

This is a common problem on the Ducatidiag forum caused by flylead reversal. It's not terminal and can be cured by simply running a wire from the centre wire in the diagnostic connector (-ve) to the -ve terminal on the battery.

Nope, I've not touched it. It started playing up last year and the dealer said it was probably due to to the battery coming of age (spending too much time on an optimate) and to change it.

So I left it over the winter lay up and now it's time to get it out again I've replaced the battery but the fault persists.

Could this still mean that the 'flyfeed' polarities have been reversed or does it indicate something else is amiss. If it is the flyfeed, how did it happen?

The fan running all the time and coil error are regular problems we see on Ducatidiag. Try running a wire from the MIDDLE pin of the diagnostic connector by the battery to -ve terminal of the battery. From what we have found out it is an earthing fault inside the ECU.

Does this mean the bike is only running on one cylinder or is it a false error message and the bike is running fine. I have had two ECUs die on me when they have lost one of the coil drivers in the ECU, I'll get around to repairing them one day when I buy a big enough magnifier to allow me to work on the circuit board
Very common fault on Fiats with the same type ECU

No - that's a capacitor fault, iirc.

It all runs fine and dandy. I'll try the wire bypass and see what happens.

Thanks DD

OK, I've tried the bypass now and it's still showing the same faults.

Bummer!

What year is your bike?

I have a spare IAW59M ECU that I could loan you to test if the ECU is at fault. (2001 - 2004)

I don't have any IAW5AM's to loan out at the moment (2004 - )

I had the same problem on my 749R after using the VDST software and from memory (hazy at best) it disappeared after disconnecting the battery then removing and checking the ECU pins and connectors. Not logical I know but the problem did not reappear!!
