Starting problem Typical, the sun is out and the bike won't start! Has anyone come across the following problem? I press the starter button to turn the engine over but the engine won't start and the starter motor keeps on churning over even though I've let go of the button. The only way to stop the starter is to flick kill switch or turn the ignition off at the key. Its been running fine since I fitted a new rectifier last month and the battery is new too. Any ideas or thoughts on what it could be would be most welcome. Cheers Steve |
I would guess at the starter solenoid sticking on. Does the engine turn over or just the starter? Sprag clutch would be my next guess. |
As Neil says does the engine turn over or is it just the starter motor, as the ECU will keep the solinoid held on until the engine is turning at a certain speed, ie. when it fires up. If the engine is turning I would suspect the Crank sensor, check the condition of its connector |
Thanks chaps. Its just the starter turning over, there's nowt from the engine. The engine itself doesn't turnover or attempt to fire up at all. I've tried several times. |
Sprag clutch me thinks. Which if you are unaware is really a sort of one way bearing. It grips the inner of the flywheel when the starter is turning then is released when the motor fires. If it is failing to grip then just the starter and not the engine would turn over. |
Did you check if there's a spark at the plugs on both cylinders, and/or if there's fuel getting through? |
Sorry, I've sent you all on a wild goose chase. The engine is turning over. I'll check for fuel and spark today after work. Hopefully its something simple. |

LOL. Actually don't, because I want to come round and watch you, and then every time you go to touch something I'm going to do that sharp intake of breath sound and see if I can put you off ;) |
My only recent bike maintenance was an oil/filter change. I really need to do more - like in the old days! |
