2003 999R vs 2007 1098S I have a dilemma (but a nice one to have). Two bikes below, same price so purely a comparison on spec. Both will have a fresh belt service and are for sale at a dealer 1098S (2007) 9k miles Rossi rep paint job (looks really good) Full 70mm Termis Few nice extras 12 month Ducati warranty 999R (2003) 4k miles Full 57mn termis 3 month third party warranty Here’s the problem… The R is an R, and I had initially wanted an R as I wanted something more interesting, but the 1098S has the ohlins, monoblocs, is faster, lighter etc etc. The 1098S in question is “something more interesting” because of the paint and extras, but it’s still a relatively common bike underneath compared to the R (no offence to any owners, but you know what I mean…) ;) The R should hold its value better, and is cheaper to insure, but more to look after so the cost really doesn’t come into it too much  The 1098S is the better bike on paper, but the 999R is a better bike for a Ducatisti?  Although, the 2003 999R is not as “good” as the later one from what I can see (no magnesium engine covers, less power, grey frame vs but has carbon tail piece. Any thoughts before I stick my hard earned down? |
Sure most will say the R simply because of its pedigree. For me, its which suits my riding if I'm doing some miles. Obviously only my opinion but having ridden a nice T9s, it's like a torture rack over any distance where the 1098 is more relaxed. 1098 should be easier to source parts for if needed and again for me I'd be less worried about keeping it clean and using it a lot than an R. Now if it was a 1098 R no contest ;) |
I wouldn't buy either. I'd use the money to do more racing instead. ;) |
knew I could count on you two to muddy the waters! ;) Funny, but I started my hunt after being tempted by a cheap 998, now its spiralling out of control! I need to buy something before the missus comes home to find a Desmo parked in the garage!! :D :o |

This sounds like the best option to me... (1098S over 999R any day!) |

More racing would be good, but seeing as the DD bike looks like this at the moment, racing is on the distant horizon! |
Spend it in the bike and not the racing, sometimes it doesn't last that long :( |
You already have the answer ..... Imagine you have a second only to decide which bike to own. One bike will immediately come into your head and that is the bike to buy. Only issue is, if it isn't either of bikes you mention. But hey, I'm new to this Zen/Life Coach stuff. ;) |

I'm no mechanic, but I think there are some bits of your race bike missing! Is that service or repair? |
Service/refurb/upgrade/repair :o |
