749 Fuel Cap Removal (Without Key...)

Alright,

I have just gotten hold of another tank for my 749 (cheers Skids) however there was no key included and it has a lock installed (and locked).

Now, on other bikes it's just a case of removing 3 allen key bolts but obviously on these bikes, the bolts are hidden.

Appart from getting the old drill out and attacking the lock, is there a more practical and less violent way to get the lock off?

Cheers,

Chris

ON a 748/916/996/998 its
Remove pump then get small screwdriver in the tank and remove the two screws that retain the catch bit and remove catch from the bottom of the filler cap

Thats not possible on the 749/999.The cap lock locates in a 'well' on the plate and the screws are not accessable from the bottom of the tank.
Your best bet would be to knock out the small roll pin where the cap hinges. With this out of the way,you might be able to pull/push/jiggle the cap out.

Cheers for the advice guys, however I gave up and got the drill out :)

Took 10 mins when I started with more violent tactics, will post a pic of what I did incase anyone else has same prob.

Basically I took a Colbolt drill bit and drilled 5 holes directly above the allen-key bolts holding the cap on the tank (only need to be around 5mm), poped in the allen-key, loosened and hay-presto, off it popped :D

Just have to be careful not to skate across the tank, use new drill bits and no cheap rubbish!
