600SS HELP & ADVICE PLEASE!!
 

Looking to buy a 600ss.

Can anyone give any advice on what to look for or problems with this model?

Any owner reviews also gratefully received.

The engine is the same as the 600 Monster and is fairly reliable.The SS is more likely to have been thrashed tho,so listen out for the usual knocks and rattles.I think it is a wet clutch on those models so it should be pretty quiet,again listen for any nasty noises and graunchy action.The chassis is same throughout the SS range and very understressed by the 600's power.Get the back wheel in the air and check for movement in the rear shock bushes,they are pretty weak and have no grease points.
If you get a test ride,do a couple of emergency stops and check the fork seals are not leaking.The early models had a few problems with leaky seals,the later seals are a retro fit and are much better.
The electrics are much the same throughout the SS range,and again fairly reliable,just check everything works,lights,indics,horn etc.Its not unusual for the regulator to fail,but as long as the charging light goes out,then it should be ok.

I had a 600ss for three years. Did most things on it includinga track day at Cadwell. If looked after they seem to be fairly reliable although they can be a bit of a bugger to start if they have been stood for a while. If buying try to find a low mileage example. My own was a 1992 (L reg) with just 7000 miles when I bought it for £1950. Sold it in December for £2000 with 11000 miles and he got a good deal. When you do get one get the belts etc changed even if they have been done within past year. It puts your mind at rest. Smaller engine does mean they run out of puff at a little over the ton but a great way to get into a Ducati for little money. Make sure all the body work is mint. Ride on and have fun.

dukeman is there any particular reason you want a 600?
The 750 comes with an extra disk and caliper and an extra can (Twice the butifull noise)

I can vouch for the 750, I've got a 99 ss and shes been a little beauty. Keeps up on the bendy bits but as said before runs a bit short of legs above the ton up mark, ask Henners, stayed in his mirrors on the last ride out.

I'd recomend one for an enrty level duke.
