The nut acts as a lock...

That is a good tip, but I would not leave the reservoir cap off overnight. That would allow moisture in the air to be absorbed into your brake fluid. :)

I have noticed on my 1996 916 that the fan does not cut in until the water reaches 210, whereas Haynes says it should start at 197.

When I get time I'm planning to remove the fan sensor and test it...

I took it out for the first time since I bought it ( very hot day ) and the fan was cutting in a 210. I see in the book that it should be 197, so...
