This symptom is exactly what I have on my 916, spoke to Tim (Motodesigns) he had no idea what it was from my description but he's having a look at it soon so i'll tell him what you have discovered...

The 998 and 916 are a similar weight and the geometry must be the same so it should be ok.

I noticed that the front tyre looks more scrubbed than the rear over near the edges, also i'm nearer to the edges on the front than the rear.

Pirelli 120/70 and180/55.

35psi and39psi.

I find the removeable rear sprocket handy cos I slip the chain off the sprocket to clean it...

Like many things the 999 looks better in real life than in a photo, to me it just looks more mechanical than the 748/9** but when you study the shape of the different parts it truly is another...

UPDATE Booked in for 12,000 mile service

When I bought the bike it had allegedly done 14,000 miles and had a service at 7,500 and 13,500. It turns out that it's reading in Kilometers which is good cos I don't think the shims have ever been...
