you could get almost everything as good or better by upgrading a 749S, but the engine in the 749R has a different bore and stroke. I had a 749R myself and there is something special about them

not a lot of help, but on a bike that old it could have been many different things, i would check through the entire throttle system, throttle, cables, throttle bodies and all linkages.

haven't got a manual, but it is pretty straightforward. take the fairings and mirrors off, then it is just a couple of bolts. i allways had more trouble geting the side fairing back on.

i had something similar, i thought that it was the throttle cable , but it turned out to be the fast idle cable was routed the wrong side of the clutch line, once i moved it the problem was cured

i don't think the newer batteries in the 749/999 series bikes respond well to being constantly connected to a charger. I found mine seemed to work better if i only connected the charger overnight...
