Just to add to Dibble's comments.
They also let out all the dust which cause's most slip. It's not a good idea to alter the std steel cover. I've seen std one's bent in against the clutch, putting large holes would make it even more likely to just fold up. If you want a vented one, get a solid billet one from Tecmoto, Casoli, my personel preference is the JHP one.
