I believe you would need to do the CBT (compulsory basic training) which is a 1 day course. Classroom, some manouveurs in a carpark, and some supervised road riding. Very straightforward and almost everyone passes so you'll be fine.

That allows you to ride a 125cc on your own for 2 years with L plates on, or have lessons on a 500 with an instructor.

So, short term you could do the CBT and get riding a small bike within a day. I assume you would need the CBT before you could take the test, and I would recommend at least a couple of lessons to get used to UK roads and be "taught" how to pass the test. Being a good rider won't mean you pass, and passing won't mean you are a good rider! A few lessons will teach you "how to pass".

Call a training school in the morning for more info though as I haven't read up on it for a few years and things change...
