Upon reflection, I have decided that the Knox is better worn the way the manufacturer intended. Although the padded bits are not particularly hard, the fact that they are there at all means a certain degree of concentration of potential impact in that particular area, instead of spreading it across the back as a whole. Not good.
So, sweaty back and worn out jacket linings it is!
