Why not just use SSH?

Or if you want a GUI, and using Gnome windows environment, Nautilus should work fine. Remote systems can be persistently mounted.

Not saying PuTTy is a bad tool (I use it when stuck with Windows), but Linux has other tools that don't require additional software. Although I appreciate your comment above was with regards to accessing a Linux box from a Windows machine.
