No they can't be made to be quieter,when you take of the clutch cover you will see why ,with all the teeth and cut outs chatting together. My 99/900SS clutch was changed at 10,000 because I thought it was noisy,had a new one fitted and with in a 100 miles sounded like before. Done 12,000 since on this one and although noisy no problems with it ,my 996 has 16,000 miles on the clock and still on the original. Change then when they start to slip or if you hear any metalic plate to plate noises.Costs about £180 to have replaces unless you do it youself. As Dickiduke said Open Cover are fine, but all that dust gets else where and I found my boots covered in dust some times. 4D
