I know this conversation has been done before, but, the current 749S probably puts out similar power to an early 916. 749's come with 14t front sprocket as standard.

Therefore with my limited knowledge I would say fitting a 14t to an early type standard 916 will be no more stressful to the chain than the current 749S is.
