You have mail. I think the SP tale goes like this, but I will gladly stand corrected if anyone knows better.
As I understand it, the SP models were homologation specials, built to comply with WSB rules. The manufacturers were obliged to produce a given number of this type of machine in order to enter WSB based on their normal production runs for road bikes, thats why so many RC30 models were made (Honda being a much larger manufacturer than Ducati).
Whilst some SP models would have made it onto tracks around the world as competitive racebikes the reason behing the SP series was to allow the factory and customer racebikes to use things such as better suspension parts and twin injectors etc. whist remaining within the WSB rulebook.
