Easiest way of getting round that is to put the laptimer under your seat pod, most of the bigger circuits like Brands, Snetty etc have their own beacons and they're quite often left on.
I bought my laptimer from Rollcentre and it cost about £250 but if you go onto the Bemsee website (british m/cycle racing club)
www.bemsee.co.uk they have a For Sale section and people are always selling stuff like that.
The good thing about a laptimer is that some of them like my one downloads to your pc and you can keep a record of laptimes for each circuit, you can note your gearing, tyre pressures etc.....that may not be what you want but its handy to have!
