748 rev counter

a little niggle ,now a pain, took del of 748bp 1995,and the rev counter works only now and then. When the bike is first started it's ok,then say you stop for fuel, and restart the bike it stops working.Back to the dealer and new clock fitted,it fails again, back to the dealer new sub wiring loom fitted,it fails again.Help would be welcome, just washed the bike and the bloody thing is miss firing, not to worry, still a fantastic bike.

Does it dance around at all?

Could be the voltage regulator, or the any number of connections that could of corroded, clean the battery terminals for one though...

Could be the voltage regulator, but the bike would probably stop altogether and not restart.
Could be wiring further back than the sub loom thats been replaced? the tacho is fed from the ecu.
Could be an earth around the clocks.
Could be the crank sensor failing? that'd also cause a misfire?
