Supergrey, as you no the dry Ducati clutch is all ways a bone of contension as to the noise they make. Clutches normally go 12,000 miles more maybe, depending on how its been treated. Often when you pull the clutch lever in ,the noise subsides . Most of the noise comes from the basket especially if its worn and the teeth of the friction plates wear into it . Have a nosy by taking of the clutch cover then rock the pressure plate back and forth you'll soon see if its warn. 4D

The clutch on my 748 is just over 16000 miles old and is understandably as noisy as a very noisy thing. It bites at the last bit of leaver travel and feels well past its best but just goes on and on and refuses to die. It will now of course turn its self inside out the very next time I press the start button.

Yep, the Ducati clutch is a noisy fella. That's why we love 'em. As long as it's working, it's fine. You can't hear it when you're zooming along anyhow, and when you are stationary you want to be heard! Pull it in when the rozzers pull up next to you though Mines done 14,000 miles and it's been turned around once to even the wear out, now it's really spankingly noisy!!

Can anybody advise:

1. What the cost is to replace as clutch?
2. What do I need to replace, other than plates and basket?
3. How easy is it for a monkey like me to complete?
4. Any special tools required?
5. How long should it take?

and, whats this turning the plates round business?

Cheers.

P.S on a 748 Bip, yellow.

I'm definitely no mechanic, so I'm sure someone will come along later to explain and correct me...... As far as I understand it, the clutch wears out on one side (the one nearest the plates) and to prolong its life (and to save you money) that part of the clutch can be turned round so it evely wears down. Now, told you I wasn't mechanical, I can't even remember the damn name of the part!!

Ade.

1. Stock plates are about £105 and a basket is circa £80 i think. You may only need plates.
2. Nothing else needs replacing unless you spot something obviuosly worn. The drum possibly.
3. Pretty easy, especially if it's just a plate change. the basket is a little more involved but not difficult.
4. If it's just a plate change, 5mm and 4mm allen keys is all you need. If the basket needs replacing you'll need a holding tool, a 30/32mm socket and a big bar to get the drum off, and then a 13mm socket.
5. Half hour tops for a plate change. Comfortable hour to do the basket as well.

There are also performance options and longevity options on the plates and or basket. Top dollar is probably the 48T STM conversion at £280. Anywhere in between for the performance plates out on the market.

There's more than one plate. If it's a stock pack, then there'll be 7.
Dont turn the plain plates around. One of them is dished and it'll end up the wrong way round.
