Breakdown - Fuel Pump or Relay?

Broke down yesterday, checked everything through - fuses, spark, petrol etc. Then realised no 'buzzing' noise from the pump when the ignition is turned on.

Need to check the relay first, Haynes manual is hopeless, where is it located?

Does anyone have an idea on cost of relay & pump?

Nick,

I recently had electrical problem, basically no lights or fuel pump etc when you turned on Ignition, traced fault to main relay which was a soggy mess inside.

The relay is amongst the cluster at lefthand side of the battery - small one is fan, large one is flasher unit and the main relay is the middle size one which on my bike is has a yellow case.

Don't know the cost of ducati one but I guess approx £5 - I have temporarily fitted one from Maplins cost £1 but you will need to make a link.

I recommend that this relay and all the others are made watertight with sealant of some kind

Don't forget that the side-stand cut-cout also plays a part in this too!

You should be able to check this by hitting the starter: stand down, no starter. stand up, starter fires.

You should also be able to hear the pump priming when you flick the stand up in neutral.

Could just be something simple like water in the connection...

Thanks guys, will check it out this week. Martin - had lights, good spark etc. but no pump noise.

This board is really excellent, already been offered a great deal on a pump!!

Can I just ask why you have to make sure all the relays are made watertight? After all Michael Fish has to say its going to be dry all month, there has to be no clouds in the sky for 300 miles before Ducati's are allowed out :lol

Had to go into the garage last night, so took my keys and everything now works - relay clicks, pump primes & bike starts.

Blooming typical, now I have a really annoying intermittent fault. Any ideas anyone?

Had something similar on my SS. Wouldnt start on occasions so I took it back under warranty thinking the immobiliser was not releasing, but it was diagnosed as a faulty fuel pump relay. Worked fine with a new relay. You might want to try that first before splashing out on a pump.

Hmm,could be something simple like the sidestand cut out relay.
Duke relays are not very reliable and prone to failure.My wifes Monster had two new ones under warranty and I bought a spare to keep under the seat.

Will replace the relay as the first step and then see what happens.

KB - don't have a sidestand cut-out, but thanks anyway.

FYI - finally sorted out by Snells in Alton (excellent service by them), the problem was caused by a fault with the alarm and not the pump or relay.

Picking it up tomorrow, hopefully the sun will stay out over the weekend!
