What is the conventional wisdom on sprocket & chain renewal ? I have got a OEM Ducati 14 tooth FR, and standard rear, and in 2-3000 miles, after some 20,000 miles in all ( not bad with a Scottoiler ) the whole lot will need changing. Is their a recommended aftermarket replacement with good quality chain & sprockets that any ST4/S pilots can recommend ?
Two options really. OE Ducati parts again, but probably the most expensive option, or go for aftermarket. I've always had good service from DID chain, although I'm running a Tsubaki at the moment, "just to see". Impressed so far though. Looks like it's built to last, it makes the DID look quite "wimpy". As for sprockets, again OE Ducati or quality OEM stuff like Afam or Renthal. You can get them in either steel or alloy. I'd stay away from the unbranded "kits" in MCN etc. because you don't know what you'll get exactly. Not all DID is H/D for example.
Just ordered new chain and sprockets for my ST2 from Riverside Motorcycles in Northampton. Going for DID gold side plate O ring chain, Renthal front sprocket and will use one of my stock of aluminium rears.
If one goes the Renthal cogs & Tsubaki chain route and pays £130 for top quality for the lot, via the B&C www.site how does one get them fitted , by someone to fit something they have not supplied.
In the Surrey / Sussex area....
The Ducati OEM ones are £ 160 with 90-120 mins to fit.
