748/996 versus 749/999 versus 848/1098

Old shape always did it for me, iconic bike. 999 new shape never hit the mark with me, now new 1098 is a modern looking 996, so back to familiar territory - gorgeous bike.

However, I think the new 1098 now makes the old 996 look really out of date and funnily enough, the 999 shape now looks better as a result - different looking bike altogether, but strangely more appealing for some reason.

I saw a bog standard 996 the other day, nice nick, but no extras and rather plain looking. Also saw a very trick looking 749 and it looked lovely. I wouldn't have looked twice before the 1098 came along.

Anyone else spotted this?

Where does the 998 fit in then

Is it some sort of inbetweenie like the Goodies song??

Must admit the later 999 with the filled in top vents don't look too bad.

IMHO A blinged up bike always looks good if done to taste.

I'm trapped in 2002 though, I don't think it would be a bright move to sell the 998, much as I might like the idea of a 1098 or 1198.

Ray.

Been to the bike shop with a mate today as a duke will hopefully be his next bike. He likes the new monster so we spent a fair while pawing over them. Had a look at most stuff while we were there as you do… hyper/1198/1098/848and a 749r all together. After a few minutes he says “you know what, that 749 looks fresher than the 1098”. Odd that as apart from the pipes and swing arm I’ve always thought the 1098 had in general looks wise, more in common with the 999 than the916, but not necessarily moving things in the right direction. They are all beautiful bikes and I would love to have one of each but yes I think your observation is spot on.

Loved my 996..............Sandra hated the 999 (but then she never stayed on the back of it for more than a day ) Both of us think the 848 is the Muts ***s.

Having ridden all the shapes they have got better to ride over the years, the 1098 is massively superior in every way to the original 916 and for me looks better and more modern. If riding matters I see no reason to buy the older bikes, you can't stop progress.
