rect/regulator wiring

Hello,

I know this has been covered many times in the past.

But is there not another way of solving this problem, see picture this is the third time this has happened to me.

Does the wire connecting box need to be here can I not just connect the wires, or are they there for a reason other than making a connection as this is where the wires burn out.

Any info would be great.

regards

Steve I have only had it happen once and when I get around to it I intend to replace the spade connectors that I have used to repair the damage with some decent round connectors that will give a larger area of contact and therefore hopefully handle the current better.
Just been talking to a mate with a 900SS who is also having charging problems at the moment so need to check his wiring.

TT,

Cut off the alternator wires close to where they come out of the l/h case and cut off the wires close to the rectifier and replace with new wires & bullet connectors.

Hello

Thankyou Kev so am I right in saying dump the junction box and use decent round connectors should be ok?

This is a three yellow wire jobbie, I have marked the wires but does it matter which ones connect up?

Sorry I missed the run out to Fox's . . and the weather was fine.

Hello

Nick H thanks I new there must be another way, where did you get the bullet conectors as I will be shopping in the morning. Sorry what grade wire would you recommend? I guess any that takes 12volts?

Those white connector boxes really aren't up to the job.

Some people on here recommend soldering the yellow wires together. I'm sure that's fine if you can make a decent job of it, or know a man who can.

What the guy who services my bike suggests (and I've done this on my own bike) is to use the old-fashioned type block connectors, where there's a little screw that clamps the wire in place, similar to in a domestic 3-pin mains plug. They look crap , but they're hidden behind the fairing. These connectors can take a lot more current, and they're easy to inspect.

Some people also suggest up-grading to a heavier cable size. The cable size *could* be bigger (maybe should be), but the connectors are the weakest link on the stock set-up.

Or what those guys said up there!

But personally, I don't like bullet connectors.

They remind me of Joe Lucas, Prince Of Darkness....

Steve the 3 yellow wires can be reconnected in any order they will still give you a 3 phase AC charging voltage for the Reg/Rec to rectify and then regulate.

TT,

I presume yours is a 2 wire alternator, like mine?

Anyway you're looking at wire that will carry a minimum of 30 amps + bullet connectors to suit. I tapped-up an electrical guy I know, who came & did it for me - job done in less than 45 mins.

Also look at this article from Shazaam! http://217.199.188.40/xmb/viewthread.php?tid=2042

Good luck!
