Throttle Stuck Open

Any ideas?

Coming back from a ride yesterday afternoon, slowing down for a roundabout and realised something was wrong, engine is revving as I change gear. Seems the engine is now ticking over at just over 4000rpm. Got the bike home eventually, although riding through town was entertaining every time I had to stop at traffic lights! Bike ran very hot coming back into town, although that may have been due to the fact I was limping along in 1st gear..
Throttle movement is no different to normal... Any suggestions?

Cheers
Martin

First stop - check the cable adjuster on the top of the throttle-grip housing - someone may have helpfully adjusted it for you when the bike was parked up.

No - it was fine when I set off, something happened on the way back.

Could well be a fraid cable, The inner wire cable sticking to the outer one somewere inside.

Might seem obvious, but you didnt accidentally get the warm up button stuck on did you ? this would make it idle at 4000rpm - to get it off you need to fully close the throttle hard and it will pop back out.

Just a thought when I saw you had mentioned 4000rpm

I would also go for a fraid cable, but also check that the cable has a free passage and is not caught up in anything, I had a motox do the same thing only to find that the cable itself had lodged itself between rad. and frame, everytime I turned the revs increased!

Right, finally got round to having a look at this.

I've had the fairing off and checked the cable, and there's nothing wrong with that. The cable pulls cleanly and the quadrant on the throttle opens, but when the throttle is released, the cable goes slack and the quadrant stays stuck open. I can close it by hand, seems that it only sticks if it opens more than a certain amount.
I've given the springs on both front and rear a squirt of WD40 to see if that will free them up, but it doesn't seem to have made much difference so far - going to try again tomorrow...

Any more suggestions before I take it in to Riverside?

Cheers

I had this on the 916, cable was fine, but as described the throttle flaps stayed open and would return very slowly.
i found where the springs are near the butterflys they were all full of crud, and a clean and light oil soon sorted that on both butterflys / springs.
hope this helps

Same happened to me on the track bike.

at the side of the throttle bodies is a plastic knuckle with a ball ended rod in it to operate both the throttle bodies at once.
This had become sticky but a quick squirt of brake cleaner and some WD40 into the knuckle sorted it out and no more sticking throttle.
Worth a try?
