yes alledgedly , new '06 999 gets the S engine, though I heard the S crank is missing so may just be heads/cams from the S (dunno if the base 999 from 05 did too) . At some point the base 999 got the racing deep sump, though that wont increase power. Only know as i'm looking at options on a new 999 or a late 05 999 and havent worked out which makes most sense yet if any :-?

Eh?
The '02-'03 bikes were a claimed 124 bhp.The '05-'06 bikes a claimed 140bhp.Alledgedly the '05< bikes got the 'S' motor, minus the deep sump.On the road tho, the extra power makes little or no differance.
The only bikes that get the deep sump are 999S,999R and 749R.

here is what I have read, 999 02 is 124bhp
999S 02 137bhp
999 05 is 140 bhp
999S 05 143 bhp
you will get a difference from bike to bike and there are lots of power figures that are different from these,
the early 999 S has more power at the top end and dont run as well as a straight 999 very low down in the revs, mine like 3 thousand revs +.
this is just my view.
hope it helps

Just checkd my '05 brouchers and the 05 999 was supposed to have the deep sump as well as the s/r, wont get to crawl under one to check until monday. Unclear what the deep sump does bar holding more oil? does it also help prevent exposing the oil pickup to air under extreme wheelies?

The 05 and the 06 are identical as engines.. the difference is with the previous model.
Also, it is not correct to say that the 05 has the 04 S engine. It is slightly different. The 2005 models are the ones that have been revamped the most, 2006 didn't get any mods from the previous year.
A dyno chart that show the diffrences...
