vented clutch cover..

rather than fork out loads of dosh, is there any reason why I cannot 'alter' the original using a jigsaw, file and large drill?
Are there any disadvantanges (except it's noisier!) to have a vented cover? Why have any cover at all?

Bradders,

The cover is first and foremost to protect the clutch.

Without one even the slowest lowside will rip off the posts and the springs from you clutch, thats before any additional damage to the clutch case and basket ...

Carbon covers aren't a lot better than having no cover hence the increase in popularity of the vented jobbies ...

They just look cool and help the clutch ventilate itself, although they aso let water in ..!!

Just to add to Dibble's comments.
They also let out all the dust which cause's most slip. It's not a good idea to alter the std steel cover. I've seen std one's bent in against the clutch, putting large holes would make it even more likely to just fold up. If you want a vented one, get a solid billet one from Tecmoto, Casoli, my personel preference is the JHP one.

It is possible to put vents into a standard clutch cover.My 'ol buddy Marko did one for me on my 851.Its easier if the cover is alloy as on Dukes up to about '98.He put the cover in a jig at work and cut out the holes/slots.

I can't rate a CNC open/vented cover enough mate. I've just had a huge get-off at Jerez (read my post in 'Trackdays' section), and it saved my entire clutch, no question.

THE best 70 odd quid I've ever spent.

I can feel another visit to the bank coming on...thanks for the advice. I figured that the key reason for it was to stop damage should I part company with my Beauty. Interesting to hear it stood up well under these conditions.

I agree with the others, the streanth of the cover is extreemly important so go for a good thick unit. here`s the one fitted to my 998s Mono.
