The locating brackets are easy to remove, then I leavered out the sides of the connector cover and slid it forward away from the cable entry, that allowed me acces to the back of the pins, but thats as far as I got

Yesterday I called in at Senna3's Alfa and Fiat specialist and talked to his business partner Simon who is a really well clued up auto electrician and when I mentioned it to him, he just said good luck.
I told him that wasn't the answer I was after as I was hoping he could tell me how to do. To that his reply was that he hadn't managed it yet

Skidlids did you push back the yellow slide? that (I think) locks the pins in position.

Yes but that didn't help any, I could do with seeing what the pins look like to work out how they latch in.

Skidlids, I have got to the same point, I have found with a pair of pliers and a bit of positive wiggling (and turning) of the wire they do come out. The pins have a barb which does come out undamaged (don't use excessive force though, I bent one barb back when I was a bit complacent, removed 6 with no problem) I then slightly bent the barbs outwards for a more positive lock and then reinserted and once locked with the yellow slide they were as strong as originally. I have been told by a NHS instrument electrician, there is a tool for folding the barbs, but I cannot see how it can be inserted and on these ecu connectors, the locking plate does the job of locking the barbs.

A good tip for removing pins is to get a plastic or metal tube that will just slide over the pin. Push this over the pin to remove and it will close the tabs in and you can remove it from the other side. A little bit of jiggling on the wire helps too!

I usually use a tool akin to the one below for extracting pins, like the ones found in the circular connectors used on 748s to 998s for connecting the front loom, not to dissimilar to the Amphenol ones on our Turbo Molecular Vac pumps at work
