Somebody asked on another thread what the MT were doing to make sure that the BHCN didn't go into terminal decline. I think that the best thing the MT could do under these circumstances would be to go to medical college and become specialists in the various health problems that we've all been suffering from, invent instant cures for all these ailments and get us all back on the road. Who knows, the MT might even pick up a few Nobel prizes along the way. Until then, people on the outside looking in and criticizing any lack of BHCN activity might want to stick to talking about things that they actually know something about.

Fordie was always gonna be a hard act to follow, he's got boundless enthusiasm and was always on the lookout for stuff we could all get actively engaged in, not just ride outs, but social stuff as well. Together we've ridden tens of thousands of miles, pretty much all of them at a brisk pace and without any major incident which is down to Fordie and to KeefyB (who is the best rideout leader I've ever ridden with).

Keith would be a natural person to look to with this ability to lead a group of riders at an entertaining pace and yet still allow for all different riding abilities, he's also got more roads and routes stored in a photographic memory than you can shake a stick at and we've only been led the wrong way on one occasion that I can remember (mind you, it was a wrong turning down a Motorway with the next junction 30 miles away ). But, we all know that Keith's got a struggle with cancer on his hands.

Other regulars have got their own battles with health on as well, but since people haven't chosen to make them public they can stay private.

This type of situation would be one where I would step up and volunteer, but though I don't have any health problems that I know about (apart from a sick sense of humour), Mrs Jools does. MS is an incurable and degenerative disease and it's reaching a point where going into a wheelchair full time is on the cards and where I am serious having to think about giving up work to become a full time carer - difficult to find the time to fettle my bikes never mind spending a whole day (or a weekend away) on the road. Also, if I bin the bike we would be buggered - I'm not even talking about a 'what if I got killed' scenario. Last January I broke my wrist in a karate accident and it was difficult enough then helping Mrs Jools get to her feet, get in and out of bed, into the bath etc...and she's worse now than she was then. So, even breaking an arm or a collarbone or any other biking injury would be a nightmare. I'm seriously thinking that my riding days might be coming to an end, especially since Mrs Jools may soon need the type of mobility aid like a big 'feck off' electric wheelchair - a decent 'go anywhere' one of those costs about 4K, or put another way, roughly what a decent 888 strada might make if I sell it. So for the moment I'll stick to contributing to the club by editing Pronto which I can do from my desk.

I would love nothing better than for somebody to wave a magic wand and see us back to the days of 15 or so Ducatis peeling into a fast sweeper with big numbers on the clock and I'm sure that's what everybody else would want too, but until somebody invents magic wands we'll just have to make do.
