Frank,

Changing the lever position either moves the lever outwards or inwards, outwards would mean that the lever has to travel further to reach the bar, as a consequence of this the piston within the master cylinder is also moving further thus pushing more fluid through the system and also the pushrod which in turn should disengage the clutch and it's plates more
