916 stuck in first gear

my pals 916 trackbike is stuck in first gear, basically started it up selacted first gear and now it wont change gear or re-select nuteral. seems like the gear selector mat be stuck as the gear lever is fairly solid,

so whats the likely cause, and how to put it right? seems like the engine side case needs to come of what if any special tools are needed , seals or gaskets are required to put it back together, should i need to take a look at the selector mechanisum?

any advice please !!!

Mood: Found a CR250. Let the bone braking begin
left hand crank case needs to come off.
if you wan to inspect gear selector.
its in the Haynes manual.
not to difficult you need to make a puller up to remove the cover as it will stay put with the alternator magnet.
other than that some three bond sealant when putting back together.
