Great Timing - NOT

Off to Magny Cours in a couple of days and the 998 has decided it wants to leak oil
Started it up last night and could smell burning oil and could see the smoke thru the headlight beams.
There isnt any coming out the exhausts.
It looks like its leaking a little and then as the engine/pipes heat up it burns this oil.
Theres a little in the bellypan and stains on the downpipess
Any suggestions? Could it be the pressure switch?

Sorry to hear that mate. I can't help but just thought you could do with a bit of sympathy. Sods law is a bugger sometimes.

Good luck with sorting it.
Jacko.

assuming you've taken a side panel off, can you see any oil around the pressure switch ?

Mine went a few weeks back and the trace of oil is pretty obvious.
Apart from that I would suggest firing it up with the panel off and seeing if you can track it down.

I had a hole in the oil cooler too, and believe me that one was hard to miss !

Cheers,
John.

what about the oil cooler pipe connections, mine did this and it was the connectors to the engine ally washer. Right hand side engine, just above behind battery. drips onto the oil filter, then downonto the front exhaust.

DJT, maybe your bike has a self defense mechanism after all... seeing how badly the pipes have been rusting she decided to bleed some oil in an attempt to healing herself...

Seriously, try the crankcase covers. It could be just a question of the sealing going away.
Copper washers not changed on an oil change also could be the reason indeed.

I hope Magny was OK.
Cheers
p

check the 22mm sump washer. I had exactly the same symptoms a while back. I found out that the washer was incorrectly seated and the oil was dripping onto the exhaust and causing it to smoke.

good luck
