Ducati specific engine tools.

Hello guys, got a few more questions for ya,

I am looking at getting the Ducati tools that enable you to:

1/ Undo the pullies on the timing belts, take off and do up.

2/ Undo the cylinder head nuts/ do up.

3/ Check belt tension of belts.

Now putting aside the belt tensioner, I have been informed that these tools cost a fortune. Is that the case?

If it is, then I will make my own versions. Some methods have been shown in the Haynes manaul.

The other thing I want to ask is:

The bolts on the ends of the conrods seem to be star shaped. Are these Torx as I have looked in the tool shops but the torx sockets I see advertised do not look right. They seem to be a different star shape.

Any advice would be great.

For cheaper belt tension tools try Snap-on or Facom
do a search using the above names and my board name and it should come up with links.
I use a Snap-on AST tool, but Facom did a cheaper one a short while after I got mine.

Also look on Ebay for the hand tools. Seen 'em a few times.

The bolts heads on the conrod bolts are simply 12 point sockets. 10mm I think. Use a 10mm 12 point socket and all is well

The pulleys can be undone with a peg spanner and a suitable socket ground to match the 4 drive points in the nut.

you can use a crow foot spaner on the head bolts or modify an open ended spanner..........................

there are several ways around most of the "special" tools. for occasional use they work fine. If you're going to use them more regularly, then look at investing in the real thing. They are pretty good quality and will last a while if you look after them. You can always sell them on at a later date and recoup some of the initial cost......

Cheers Nelly,

I have been looking on line at various tools and had thought of the crows head tool as well. I may do a bit of spanner bending and welding!

I see the other threads on this site about the belt tensioning. Some good bits of info there.

All in all, I think that I am gonna make up the tools and see how I go.

I will adapt a socket to undo the nuts on the timing belt pullies and I have a clutch holding tool that should keep them still to do this.

There's 4 holes in the cam pulleys that the factory tool locates on. I'd try and use these rather than hold the pulley teeth. If you mark them you'll cut the belts up. You can use a peg spanner.

I used to use a 15mm ring spanner on the head nuts with a socket welded on the shank. Measure back from the ring to the socket, calculate the extra torque applied and adjust the torque wrench to suit. worked fine for me for years.

What about using the method of the old belt with a set of mole grips to tighten it up. As suggested in the Haynes manual?

Those nuts do up to 72Nm............. I'd use a peg spanner

Cheers mate. I have those in the workshop, so I will take your advice. Got most tools just not the Ducati ones!!

Micrometers, dail gauges, Timing disc, Torque wrenches, pullers and air tools etc.
