Starter not working/interlocked failed

Bloody Italian electrics. Bike would start yesterday, press the starter button and silence (clutch in, in neutral side stand-stand up and down). Bumped her off down the street (as I had to move her) and moved the bike. When I stopped again I tried the starter and it still wasn't working. Then when I put the side stand down again the starter worked.

I assume it some safety interlock that is screwing up. As it is now working I will naturally forget until it fails, probably facing uphill 100 miles from home so has anyone got any ideas on how to a) diagnose the problem properly b) fix it and c) get round the interlock

Thanks

*should mention, it's a 1999 748 Biposto

Sounds like the interlock is still in place on the stand. you can bypass it, but first check the switch on th esidestand isn't cruded up and not working properly. Take it off, clean it and dose it with WD40.
