749/999 clocks on a 998?

Whilst riding in to work this morning I was suddenly struck by the thought that if the 998 has the same testastretta engine as the 999, is the wiring loom similar, and if so, would it be a relatively easy (but certainly not inexpensive ) job to fit 749/999 clocks to a 998?

Anyone any ideas? Just wondering, thats all...

cheers,
Ben

Don't think so. As far as I know, they clocks on the 999 connect to the ECU via Can-Bus, which is a communications protocol originally developed by Bosch. The wiring will be completely incompatible. It is essentially a single wire that transmits all the data, as opposed to individual wires on the 998, etc.

Borrow someone's wiring diagram from the 999 and compare it to yours.

Yep, I think this is right, Ducati are starting to exploit some of the technology resident in the MM ECUs.

I expect you could do it but you'd have to swap the whole loom and dash. I expect (from experience) that one or two of the sensors may be differenent too.

Rgds,

Rob

My understanding............and I'm not that technical when it comes to bike mechanics/electrics................is that although the engine is much the same that is really the only similarity between the 998 & 999 Testastretta models.

Essentially though, design features & components for the 998 rely on the heritage of the 916/996/998 base design.

The 999 is a total redesign of just about everything and as Felix says certainly the clock wiring design is totally different.....sorry.

The clock and related instrumentation on the 999 is brilliant though!!
