just take your time with the side stand and you will be fine.
I would also suggest getting your hands on a paddock stand for when the old girl is parked up for her winter rest.
welcome to the club, as you can tell by some of the replys never go on a ride out to a pub and say, my round chaps

An ABBA stand is more versatile than a paddock stand.

i heard horror stories about the sidestand reliability thing, but never actually found anyone who suffered from it (or their bike)

'just a bit of scaremongering from boys in the land of the rising sun, i expect.

been down to hythe marina once or twice, very nice.
