flywheel marks

this is probably a v silly question but anyway -

- when changing the belts on a 600ss carbed version do you have to line up the timing mark on the flywheel as well as lining up the three cambelt pulleys
- is this seen through the left hand window?
- what does the mark look like and is there more than one on the flywheel

I am asking teh above because there appear to be loads of marks on my flywheel and none of them seem to be lined up when the pulleys are

i think i have resolved that so long as the pulleys are all in line then no problem ie the flywheel doesnt matter
is there any way of securing the pulleys so they dont rotate or is this overkill?

next question - the tension bolts seem very shallow - is there a knack to avoid rounding the buggers off?

Mood: Hmmm Conference season
Dont need to lock the Pulleys they are peasy to rotate back to where they should be as your re assembling.
Yea the bolts are shallow so use a good quality set of allen Keys, Not the sunday market type.
And finally , yup no need to worry where the flywheel marks are.

I bought a low range torque wrench just so I could do the service involving the belt change as i was told the bolts are quite fragile.

Good luck - Frank

Hmmm.....cant find a piccy and the diagram from the WSM I have isnt clear either.

Ahhh...just checked the Haynes manual - they are just like punched marks on the edge of the flywheel, it shows the first of the two marks together being TDC, next is firing point at idle then after a space a third 'dot' for firing point at full advance.

From memory my engine must of been apart at some time as I believe there is white paint on one of the marks.

Good luck - Frank

NB - here is the best Website for mtce info and on this page - belt adjustment:

Mood: is it cos i is a bricklayer
there are three marks pertaining to each piston- two marks for the pick up coil marks

you;ll find two dots that are very close together - one is slightly larger than the one next to it - this is the TDC the next one about 7-8mm awayturning flywheel anticlockwise is tickover firing point -the next one is the firing point full chat-hope this makes sense
