Unhappy 999 Bip- oil leak

HI everyone - i'm new to the club and Ducati's after spending 6 years on jap bikes.
Had a problem last week- did 245 miles through the lakes last sunday- but stopped to fill up with fuel about 10 miles from home- discovered that oil had been leaking onto the fairing and obviously blowing onto the rear tyre .
ive stripped the fairing off the bike and i'm currently in the process off checking the air box/filters to see whether any oil has come up through the breathers- thats when i work out how too get the top off the air box?

is there two small air filters on either side?

anyway has anyone else had this problem- ive found the thread on the leaky oil coolers and i'll check with ducati uk if mine has been recalled- it currently has a KTM cooler fitted.

is it possible for the oil to come up through the breathers- or am i wasting my time looking.

Any help / advice would be appreciated.

Not a great start to Ducati ownership- but i'm not giving up yet.

thankyou degre7

tahnks for reply

at the moment NO - which is strange, i'll maybe stick the tank back on it and fire her up in the morning- that might shed some light on it- but i did run it when i got back last sunday with the fairings off- but couldn't see anything obvious.

aint done much with the ugly model duke ! lol
but I did have a situation where by my oil filler plug seal was weeping and after a long ride it had dribbled down into belly pan and then dripped on to my tyre !
worth a check !

What model year is the bike?
The oil cooler recall only affected the real early bikes,...'02/03.
Yup,the dodgy ones were made by KTM,......

Its not a deep sump engine,is it?If so,check the sump filter housing for signs of grounding out.(Yes really!)

Yep. They fit between the airbox & the airtube on each side.

Thumbs up cheers

thanks for the replies chaps- i'll check what you have all said this morning.

the bike was registered june 04 - but still has the KTM oil cooler on- so i'll check with Ducati UK whether it should have been recalled.

anyway i'll fire her up this morning and look for the obvious.

thanks again

Please do check with Ducati Uk but I think the later KTM oil coolers were ok.
Have a look at the oil pipe unions,....oh yeah, some rocker covers can weep the black stuff too.

Thumbs up All is well

thanks again for the replies.

But ive stripped the bike- ran it - and no oil to be seen anywhere.
Cooler seems fine with no signs of fresh or old oil leaking.
Iv'e given the bike a good run up and down the bypass near where i live- and she seems fine now.

I can only think that some oil has come through the breathers and into the air box and was just draining away.

anyway i'll keep you posted if it happens again- ansd the cause off it.

cheers degre7
