Sorry if it's been said already, but... aren't there a few similarities (wheels, pipes, heat shields) between the 1098 and Hypermotard - which shouldn't be there for two, supposedly, different style of bike?

Ducati are very much into the "modular" approach to building motorcycles. It's a cost effective strategy as it reduces the amount of engineering, component testing and "re-inventing the wheel" needed to bring a new motorbike onto the market. Most manufacturers employ this approach to a greater or lesser extent.
Hence, you will see identical features on very different kinds of motorcycle. The engine, for one thing ...

Ducati only really design and build the engines and frames - everything else is bought in. Why redesign a perfectly good caliper every year (a la Honda/Kawasaki/Yamaha/Suzuki) when you just buy in the best Brembo have to offer in bulk at greatly reduced prices? No design overhead, no research, just buy them in and bolt them on. Same goes for most parts - chain, wheels, master cylinders, forks, shock, etc.

A very clever way of keeping costs down for such low volume production.

Aprillia do the same, but they actually pass the costs savings onto the customer.

Thanks Guys for the replies.

I am just surprised that a 'superbike' plus price to match, might share some veryvisible similar parts. Fair enough some internals - but the wheels and exhausts Iwoudl have thought could be nicely different styling cues to reflect different uses etc...

Oh well, as long as they are saving money - pity it won't be us...
