I'd like to guage how I'm doing/improving during the day on track days, not interested at this stage in times vs lap records etc but it must be a good indicator:

1. Of how I'm progressing during the day
2. How 'dialled-in' I am to consistant laps
Consistancy = smooth = speed

What are the options assuming I have to do it all myself and whilst riding. Is it possible to set up something similar to the 749/999 functionality?

The organisers say you cant use them though. (Timing equipment).
Cheaper option - Nokia phones have a lap timer function. Just ask someone in another group if they will time you for a few laps. (Ideal if you have a mate there either not riding or not in same group as you).

Buy a pedal bike computer. Can do lap times, record max speed, calculate average speed etc.??

Any sort of timing by ANYONE at a track day invalidates any insurance you may have taken out.

Also wonder if it invalidates the organisers insurance too ?

If you happen to have timing gear, you very often find circuits have their own beacons, and forget to turn them off.

Dunno, but some organisers do let you use timing equipment, as long as you dont ride like a tw@T chasing tenths etc
