\'98 SPS=aluminium timing pulleys?

I stumbled upon a strange thing yesterday while doing service on my bike ('98 916SPS)..

Everytime I have had the timing pulleys exposed I have thought "gee, they look just like grey anodised aluminium pulleys, not like the black steel as on other bikes.." But I have never thought more about it, shims, collets and rockers tend to draw my attention after this...

Yesterday I was at it again so I tried them with a magnet.. It did not stick at all.. aluminium they are afterall..

This (small difference) hasn't been mentioned anywhere in any magazines, or any documentation (at least I have not seen it).

Anyone know more?
Is this specific for the '98 916SPS?

SPS owners of all years, go forth with your magnets and check your pulleys!
