Exhaust Pipe Sizes

Hi All, some clarification on the Ducati exhausts sizing, when you see advertised 50mm is this the internal diameter of the pipework going upto the silencer or the internal diameter of the spout at rear of can ? Also are the full size pipes available upto the headers ?
Many thanks.

Hi, Briefly (if we ignore the 52-57mm race type systems) there are 3 main types; 45mm dia full system, 45mm headers to 50mm dia end cans with a 45-50mm centre pipe and finally a full 50mm system (as fitted to 998s I believe). I hope this helps. Depending on your model, state of tune and intended use be careful not to over size the exhaust. Over sizing pipes esp the headers will reduce the efficiency of gas extraction at low rpm and therefore effect tractability in most 'real world' situations.

Cmoss,

For Termignoni, the diameter is measured as the Outside Diameter of the pipes, not the tailpipes.

If you have 50mm cans then yes you can buy the rest of the pipework needed to go 50mm all the way. However, that's an unbelievably expensive way to do it, the manifolds alone are circa £350 each!

Best bet is to find a full system. The 996 SPS came with a full 50mm system and there's usually a few 50mm full systems on eBay. I'd expect to pay somewhere between £600 and £800 depending on condition etc. Another option would be to look to the US, with the current exchange rate you can get a brand new full system for not much more than second hand over here.

Hope that helps,

Neil

P.S. If you've got a 996 then a 998 system won't fit.

748R also has a 50mm full system. The 748RS with a 54mm system

And also note that the 998 Testastretta full and half systems do not fit the earlier bikes, ONLY the Cans will.

Thanks Guys, had a pair of carbon end cans on this bike and not to sure the sizing. Now purchased a full WSB 54mm carbon system, ready for fitting today will probably need re-Dynoing?
