Hi

Not EXACTLY the same bike, I know, but hopefully this might help.

I've got a pair of 998S's: one for the road, that I bought in 2002 and one I bought recently to convert to a race bike.

When I bought my first 998S (Jun-2002), I was told that with the new ECU setup (as you know it's not just an EPROM change, as on the old bikes), it was necessary to opt for a new ECU for any pipe change, in order to ensure adequate fuelling. The cost of these ECUs at the time was extraordinary (something like £800), but they came with a pair of 54mm Termignoni cans (and adapter pipe) for around £1,200. With that (and my warranty) in mind, I decided to go for that option, and I must say, the results were fantastic. My bike puts out 142bhp at the rear and is exceptionally clean all the way from tickover. I admit, I must have a "good-un" to get this type of output, but the smoothness is remarkable.

When I bought my second 998S recently, the previous owner had had a set of custom pipes made by Swona of Edinburgh (very good and strong company, with a lot of experience of such systems). The best they managed with a Power Commander III (the alternative to a DP ECU) was 133bhp, but on a different dyno unfortunately. The key point however, is that despite many efforts, they never actually got it to tickover cleanly.

Given what you've spent on the bike, and the necessity to keep your warranty up to date, I know the route I'd be taking.

Hope that helps.

I have a 998s Mono, with 50mm Termi`s, and i recon its got one of the best engines around, the testastreta unit is a definit improvement over the previous series of engines and seems very resposive.

I am sure it's very beautiful, sps955, but surely a bit over the top for an engine that produces "only" in around 140 bhp. I am sure it's great if you've got the full Corse motor that produces 188 bhp and costs about 18 grand.

As other people have found out, making large changes to one component can lead to unexpected problems in other areas. For instance fitting such a large exhaust will give tyre clearance problems with the stock swinging arm. There are a lot of other ways you can run into similar situations. My advice unless you are certain of the side effects of such changes, consult a specialist like JHP.

Very wise comments. To many people think that biggest is always best.
One mod, one step at a time!

I am replying to what i have been asked.
And the first comment i made was to talk to David at JHP.
This is the same system that i have jus been told to fit to my 998R.
I don't think they will tell you any different today as they advised me to fit this system last week.
Budgets might be different but i wasn't told what he was willing to spend only that he wanted info on what was available and what costs.
Since the 998R comes with 54mm pipes as standard they are not much bigger at 60mm.

998R comes with 50mm as standard.

They have tried selling the same system to me too.
I was told it would fit ok but would need setting up with a DB tronics box

hi,

I have a full DP 54mm Ti 102dB (quiet !) system fitted on my 998R. This was recommended as the best compromise for road and the odd track day use. The price quoted was £1942 inc VAT complete with a new ECU. This was reduced a bit as I part ex'd my unused 50mm supplied pipes.

It was a pretty tight fit between the cylinder head and the header pipes and also routing around the sump extension drain plug and out by the swing arm. It did all get fitted ok though. The rh-footpeg needed some spacers installed to move it away from the actual pipes.

At the same time I did enquire amount the 57mm system, quoted at £2600 plus £900 for a Corse ECU, if you could actually get hold of one. The other option was to have the existing ECU sent to Ducati to have it reprogrammed for the larger 57mm pipes.

You have to be a bit careful as the full 998r 54mm systems is different to a 996R and 998s 54mm system. Probably not by much but enough to get a different part number in the DP catalogue.

There was some info on the Ducati web site for 998r used in Endurance racing and the choices were 54mm for short tracks and 57mm for the higher speed circuits.

I know that Vince Whittle who racers in the MRO with a unmodified 998s engine uses 57mm Ti system. Mind you the rest of the bike is pretty special and Vince is riding really well to make up for the minimum engine work.
