Well, if you're buying clutch plates anyway the difference in cost between steel and ally plates is negligable. I had ST4S ally plates fitted to my ST2 the first and only time that I needed them changed. Far quieter and less prone to a notchy clutch action.
My main logic for fitting them was that the clutch basket is steel, plates made of softer ally won't hammer the clutch basket into little ridges so easily because it's the plates that will take the knocks. The plates are going to wear out anyway and are easy to change, whereas a basket isn't rocket science to change but still a bigger job
