also don't the SPS engines have the pukka sand cast engine cases rather than the mass produced stuff thgat the S gets ??

It does amuse me when people start telling everyone their S's have SPS engines when in fact they don't.

An S is not an SPS on the cheap, if it's SPS grunt you want, buy an SPS ... do not under any circumstances pay SPS money for an S.

The biggest difference is there aren't any 2002 SPS's or 996S's

Year 2000 was the last year of SPS production, the 996R was the 2001 model.

the 996S was a year 2001 model only.

Anything else is just a late registration.

The SPS did not have sand cast crank cases to my knowledge either.


rattler is correct, titanium rods, and definately resale value IMHO

Year 2000 SPS has Ohlins forks and steering damper, single seat, carbon front mudguard, airbox, heat shield, rear mudguard and number plate holder, 2 sets of termis (legal and carbon fibre, with 2 chips) paddock stand, bike cover, and the all important SPS numbered plaque on the headstock for vain, pretentious people like me who like the extra bling factor.

Of course many of these extras are added to Bips and S's.

Initial depreciation on SPS's is horrific but if you're picking one up now i reckon they will hold their value better than the other models, well at least mine did after a year of ownership and an extra 4000 miles.

The 996S has SPS cams and same gear ratios as the year 2000 SPS.

996s didn't get Ohlins forks whereas the 2000 996SPS did.

The early ones do, but not all of them.

Don't bother with an S - get a SPS - it makes much more sense. Its one of the greatest bikes that Ducati have made.

There was a case for getting an S when the SPS's had run out of warantee, but as they're all too old now, go for a SPS - oh yeh and RAC membership

The SPS is no more or less reliable than any other ducati.

I have not had the slightest problem with mine in over 13000 miles.

Agree with Mr Bean here, my SPS did have a couple of rockers but never broke down.

In fact none of the 5 Ducati's i've owned which have covered a good few miles have ever broken down (had the odd warranty claim for stuff).

Seriously i took one to Morocco and there isn't even a Ducati dealer or importer in the country, without any concerns.
